It is that time of year again when life screeches to a stop in Peru and we all take the time to pay homage to our mothers, grandmothers, and any other mother that might cross our path. Restaurants are full to bursting, flower stores are sold out, jewelry shops are celebrating the great week they have just had, and the spas and hair salons are getting ready for a busy next week honoring gift certificates. Without a doubt, today overshadows Children´s Day, Father´s Day, International Women´s Day, Independence Day, and any other date except maybe Christmas. In other words, Mother´s Day here is a big deal.
In Peru, we celebrate Mother´s Day on the second Sunday in May, along with most other countries, but you might be surprised to learn that Argentina celebrates it on the third Sunday in October, Panama on December 8th (coinciding with the Feast of the Immaculate Conception), Nicaragua May 30th, the Dominican Republic on the last Sunday of May, Paraguay on May 15th (coinciding with their national day), Bolivia May 27, and El Salvador, Guatemala and Mexico on May 10th. It is just one more example of the diversity between nations in Latin America.
On behalf of all of us at Web Spanish, !Feliz Día Mamá!
