Resolutions 2016: Sharpen my mind; Expand my horizons.

Sharpen Your MindIf you are a person who likes to make the most of the few short years we get to spend on this vibrant, blue planet of ours, read on. Today’s topic is about challenges, and how the New Year is a great time to take on fresh learning opportunities. After all, pursuing challenges keeps us young, keeps us healthy, and it breathes life into what might otherwise be a boring, mundane existence, and the start of the new year is a memorable date to measure against your progress, and an inspiring time to begin afresh.

(If on the other hand, you are happy just piddling along, passively absorbing TV rays and making small-talk about the same-old, and wringing your hands about the latest national threat, turn around now; you took a wrong turn to get here in the first place).

What Defines a Challenge?

Well, ask a hundred people and you’ll get a hundred different answers, but my own take on a New Year’s worthy challenge is that it needs to have the following characteristics:

1) Pursuing the goal takes you out of your comfort zone
2) You feel at least moderately passionate about reaching the goal
3) Progress towards the goal requires a least some discipline

Now, if you are perusing this blog it is because you have a least a passing interest in learning Spanish. Good for you. Even a basic knowledge of Spanish opens up massive travel opportunities and facilities friendship with millions of wonderful new people – and if business is your thing – knowing Spanish will bring you closer to hundreds of millions of potential clients.

Out of Your Comfort Zone and Into the Fire

Our online Spanish course is not a total learning solution, since you can only learn so much in a language classroom. It is outside of the classroom where you really need to put in the work, and this is where you really need to step out of your comfort zone. That’s because learning a language requires mental exertion: you need to apply yourself reviewing lists and flash cards in order to commit new vocabulary to memory and you need to struggle to formulate phrases in your head, using the newly memorized vocabulary as building blocks. It is a humbling experience, but it will help you to motivated when you consider that what you spend in frustration, you get in brain food. Study after study has shown that learning a foreign language is great mental exercise which can sharpen your memory and delay the effects of aging on our precious gray matter.
