Basic  
    Student has no or little previous Spanish experience.  
       
    Upper Basic  
    Student understands simple questions spoken at below-normal speed and can construct sentences about him or herself using basic vocabulary.  
       
    Intermediate  
    Student can initiate, sustain and end simple conversations about everyday topics, understand the majority of questions and instructions spoken at below-normal speed, and use vocabulary related to his/her activities and preferences.  
       
    Upper Intermediate  
    Student can initiate, sustain and end simple conversations about a range of topics at near-normal speed, using different tenses. He/she can read and write about varied topics.  
       
    Advanced  
    Student can initiate, sustain and end a wide variety of complex conversations at near-normal speed, use Spanish effectively in professional settings, debate the pros and cons of different topics and read and write about a wide range of topics with few mistakes.  
       
    Upper Advanced  
    Student is almost native. He/she can speak and understand Spanish spoken at normal speed, as well as reading and writing about a wide range of complex topics with ease.
