Spanish Idiom: “Más vale pájaro en mano que ciento volando”

“A BIRD IN THE HAND IS WORTH TWO IN THE BUSH” doesn’t quite translate directly into Spanish, but there is a close equivalent which translated roughly would be “A bird in the hand is worth one hundred in the air”.

Listen to our fortune teller dish out this idiomatic expression in his prescriptive advice to one of his fans.

BIENVENIDOS, MIS FIELES SEGUIDORES A LA LECTURA DEL DÍA DE HOY.
WELCOME, MY FAITHFUL FOLLOWERS TO TODAYS READING.

EN ESTA OPORTUNIDAD RESOLVEREMOS LA CONSULTA DE UNA DE NUESTRAS ESPECTADORAS.
IN THIS OPPORTUNITY WE WILL SOLVE THE QUERY OF ONE OF OUR SPECTATORS.

LUCÍA, NOS CUENTA QUE, DESPUÉS DE BUSCAR EMPLEO POR ALGÚN TIEMPO, HA RECIBIDO UNA PROPUESTA MUY BUENA DE UNA MODESTA EMPRESA LOCAL.
LUCIA, TELLS US THAT AFTER SOME TIME SEARCHING FOR A JOB, SHE HAD RECEIVED A VERY GOOD PROPOSAL FROM A MODEST LOCAL COMPANY.

ELLA DICE QUE DEBE EMPEZAR A TRABAJAR LA PRÓXIMA SEMANA, PERO LUCÍA DESEA ESPERAR UN POCO MÁS PARA BUSCAR OTRA OPORTUNIDAD EN ALGUNA EMPRESA MUCHO MÁS GRANDE.
SHE SAYS SHE SHOULD START WORKING NEXT WEEK , BUT LUCIA WANTS TO WAIT A LITTLE MORE TO FIND ANOTHER CHANCE IN A MUCH BIGGER COMPANY.

VAMOS A VER QUÉ LE ACONSEJA LA ESFERA DE LA SABIDURÍA A LUCÍA.
LET’S SEE WHAT DOES THE ESPHERE OF WISDOM ADVICES TO LUCIA.

MUY INTERESANTE. “MÁS VALE PÁJARO EN MANO QUE UN CIENTO VOLANDO”.
VERY INTERESTING. “A BIRD IN THE HAND IS WORTH TWO IN THE BUSH”.

¿QUÉ QUIERE DECIR ESTO? QUE CUANDO SE PRESENTAN LAS OPORTUNIDADES DEBEMOS APROVECHARLAS.
WHAT DOES THIS MEAN? THAT WHEN ONE HAS AN OPPORTUNITY ONE MUST TAKE ADVANTAGE OF IT.

ES POSIBLE QUE POR ESPERAR ALGO MEJOR NOS QUEDEMOS SIN AMBAS OPCIONES Y TENGAMOS QUE EMPEZAR TODO DE NUEVO.
IT IS POSSIBLE THAT BECAUSE OF WAITING FOR SOMETHING BETTER TO COME, WE RUN OUT OF BOTH OPTIONS AND WE HAVE TO START ALL OVER AGAIN.

RECUERDEN, AMIGOS: “MÁS VALE PÁJARO EN MANO QUE CIENTO VOLANDO”.
REMEMBER, FRIENDS: “A BIRD IN THE HAND IS WORTH TWO IN THE BUSH”.

Y ESTO HA SIDO TODO POR HOY. PRONTO NOS ENCONTRAREMOS EN OTRA OPORTUNIDAD CON MÁS CONSEJOS.
AND THIS HAS BEEN ALL FOR TODAY. SOON WE WILL MEET AGAIN WITH MORE ADVICE.

En esta lección aprendimos la frase idiomática: In this lesson we learned the phrase:
“Más vale pájaro en mano que un ciento volando” y se usa para aconsejar a las personas que tienen muchas posibilidades u oportunidades.
“A bird in the hand is worth two in the bush” and it is use to advise people who have many possibilities or opportunities

To truly get the meaning of these Spanish sayings, we think it really helps to hear them in context. In fact, if you wanted to sum up our methodology, it would be something like “contextualized learning”. In all of our Spanish on line classes, we try to go deeper than just communicative learning, which can actually be pretty banal. Our drive is to build content into the conversation so that when you learn with Web Spanish, you approach Spanish holistically, incorporating meaningful dialogue, facts, opinions, and much more into the mix. We hope that you can join us at some point.
